The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) was supposed to protect LGBTQ workers. To get the bill passed, strategists infamously proposed stripping out protections for “gender identity,” leaving only “sexual orientation.” The cisgender gay leadership debated whether to sacrifice the trans community for a “half-loaf.” In response, trans activists and allies coined the rallying cry: “No more half-loaves!” They argued that a movement that abandons its most vulnerable members is no movement at all.
