In the pantheon of 20th-century systems science, few books are as cited yet as rarely read as by Hsue-Shen Tsien (Qian Xuesen). While Norbert Wiener’s Cybernetics (1948) coined the term, it was Tsien’s 1954 volume that translated the abstract nervous-system metaphors of cybernetics into rigid, mathematical engineering practice.

Years earlier she’d received an anonymous note: “Engineering is a moral act.” She kept it pinned above her whiteboard. Tonight she added a second note: “Teach systems to refuse the easy answer.”
