In September 1961, in the dusty, remote mining town of Jadotville (now Likasi) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 156 Irish soldiers faced an impossible enemy. Surrounded by a force of nearly 4,000 battle-hardened Katangese gendarmes and foreign mercenaries, they did the unthinkable: they held their ground for six days, inflicted over 1,000 casualties, and suffered zero combat deaths. Yet, when they finally surrendered—out of ammunition, water, and hope—they returned home not as heroes, but as cowards. For nearly half a century, the Siege of Jadotville remained one of Ireland’s greatest military secrets and most shameful cover-ups.
